Prepare yourself to switch-over to the new payment system of the National Bank of Poland

SORBNET2 adapter on the UPPS platform is used for trouble-free switch to a new payment system of the National Bank of Poland

A new payment system called SORBNET2, using the SWIFT network as a communication medium, will be launched at the beginning of 2013. Hence banks will cease using the existing SORBNET system and interface module of SORBNET_BW.
The National Bank of Poland, preparing the SORBNET2 system for operation, has obligated banks to participate in the tests
scheduled for 2012.
Sygnity provides banks with a solution allowing for an easy switch to the new payment system. The solution is the  SORBNET2 Adapter based on an authoring payment processing system called UPPS (Universal Payment Processing System). The UPPS payment processing system has a modular construction, which allows for its implementation in any configuration: from a minimum (only SORBNET2 Adapter) to full functionality of the payment processing system.

Implementation options

Approaching our customers’ needs in a flexible way, we offer two options of implementation of the UPPS platform with
the SORBNET2 Adapter. The first option assumes the use of files currently generated by the bank with payment messages in the SORBNET format or readout of messages directly from a data base compliant with the SORBNET_BW application.
In this case, the SORBNET2 Adapter on UPPS platform operates in a converter mode. When using ready SORBNET
messages, it changes them into a format compliant with SORBNET2 and sends them by SWIFT network to the NBP.
The entire process is also possible in the opposite direction, where SORBNET2 input messages are changed into SORBNET
format and stored in a target location (file or data base).

Such a solution allows to reduce the implementation costs and use current processes of servicing SORBNET messages operating within the bank. The second option assumes a complete integration of the UPPS platform with the central bank system. The data needed for generating SORBNET2 messages are collected by means of a special adapter suitable for the central infrastructure possessed by the bank. On the basis of the data collected, the UPPS system generates SORBNET2 messages and sends them by means of SWIFT network. SORBNET2 input messages are transferred via UPPS directly to the central bank system.
Such a solution allows for a close integration of the UPPS system with the central bank system, which makes it possible to use the platform functionality completely.
This option is required in the case when the use of other UPPS system adapters (ELIXIR, EuroELIXIR, SEPA) is planned or when there is a need to “release” from the current process of SORBNET message servicing.


Features of the SORBNET2 Adapter solution on the UPPS platform include:

  • possibility of conversion between SORBNET and SORBNET2 formats
  • processing of such messages as MT103, MT103+, MT202, MT202cov, MT012, MT019, MT900, MT910, MT940 and MT950
  • monitoring and management of the list of payment orders sent and bank accounts at the NBP,
  • flexible integration with the SWIFTNet network reconciliation reports
  • replacement of the SORBNET_BW module functionality (creation, browsing, edition and deleting orders before sending)
  • validation of SORBNET2 format with a possibility of elaborating operation schemes in the case of error identification (autocorrect, manual processing)
  • possibility to use the entire functionality of the UPPS platform when implementing the SORBNET2 solution or at a later date
  • pursuant to the adopted plan of bank system development

Opportunities of the UPPS platform
Payment processing architecture of the bank possessing several transaction systems, using various payment servicing instruments, creates a complicated communication network. Such a decentralized architecture leads to a decrease in efficiency and deterioration of transparency of the entire payment processing system, which as an effect has a negative impact on both security and operational reliability.

Apart from playing the role of the integrator of interbank payments, the UPPS system succeeds in managing flow of messages within the internal bank infrastructure.
UPPS is characterised by a flexible architecture, being a response to the present dynamic development of the market of services related to servicing of non-cash transactions.
The system is equipped with a set of universal adapters adjusted to communication with the most frequently used data exchange interfaces.
Owing to this, we significantly reduce time and costs related to adjustment of our product to the bank payment processing architecture.


The UPPS system features:

  • high level of security implemented by an extended module of message validation and cyphering services
  • full control over the activity of system operators
  • velocity and scalability of the solution obtained owing to the use of a model combining both concurrent and pipeline computing
  • module of reports with a wide range of target formats
  • service of Polish and European payment systems (ELIXIR, EuroELIXIR, SORBNET, SORBNET2, SEPA, SWIFT)
  • servicing of payment flow with a possibility to automatize the entire process (compliance with STP standard)


The UPPS system has been based on the Java Enterprise Edition platform. The solutions applied have allowed to obtain the system of high capacity and a satisfactory level of scalability of adapters responsible for message processing.

possibility of manual or automatic selection of the mode of message processing service
support for a single sign-on model, based on the use of external data base of users and rights


Logical architecture of the system is composed of the following modules:

  • Payment service module – responsible for verification of correctness of payment messages and adjustment of messages to defined templates
  • Adapter module – responsible for processing of messages coming from different sources and for servicing of generating output messages in a suitable format
  • Operational module – allowing for manual servicing of messages (browsing, applying filters, preparing for exporting) and is responsible for managing of operation tasks
  • Automation module – used for automatic performance of importing and exporting of payment messages
  • Report module – responsible for generating reports (in XML, PDF, XLS and other formats) as well as for servicing of report templates
  • Administrative module – manages accounts of operators and their rights, as well as allows for the change of system parameters


All the listed areas are combined by the enterprise service bus based on the JMS (Java Message Service) standard, allowing for maintaining efficient communication between modules.
